
FALL ART WORKSHOP SERIES 2008

Whether you’re a published novelist, an aspiring essayist, or someone who writes for only for the pleasure of seeing your words on the page, you know good storytelling skills are essential to the craft of writing. In this intimate and interactive workshop, you’ll learn about the elements that make a compelling story, how to use your five senses to liven your prose, how to uncover your personal truth and incorporate it into your writing,
and how to use punctuation and word choice to set the mood, emotion, and scene. We’ll also explore the concept of Felt Sense -- using the mind-body connection to access ideas and creativity and work through blocks. Writing experience is not necessary.
Instructor Kimberly Hamill first learned to weave from Navajo weaver Pearl Sunrise. She then apprenticed for two years with Racehel Brown (founder of Weaving Southwest and author of The Weaving, Spinning and Dying Book.
Sherri Haab is a best selling craft author with over 20 published books to her credit, with several selling over a million copies each. Award winning titles such as: The Incredible Clay Book(Klutz), The Art of Metal Clay, Metal Clay and Mixed Media Jewelry, The Art of Resin Jewelry, Beaded Macramé Jewelry and Designer Style Jewelry(Watson Guptill). Publishing honoraries include Craftrend�s 2006 & 2007 Best General Craft Book Award, Publisher's Weekly Cuffie Award, and Oppenheim's Toy Portfolio Gold Award. She has recently released a how-to DVD on Metal Clay with another DVD about Resin Jewelry to follow (CCP videos). Television appearances include: The Carol Duvall Show (HGTV), Jewelry Making (DIY), Good Things Utah (ABC) and Beads, Baubles and Jewels (PBS).
Learn to make simple silver metal clay charms and bead forms. After the metal clay is fired and finished, students will go on to make beautiful mixed media jewelry pieces. Sherri will teach techniques using polymer clay, resin, glitter and small inclusions to add color and sparkle to your finished metal clay charms and beads. Finished pieces can then be used in a variety of ways. Make a “sampler bracelet” of mixed media charms or choose a favorite technique perfect for a pendant or pair of earrings. This class will inspire you to look at simple craft materials in a whole new way when combined with precious silver to create designer style jewelry.

Day One – Saturday September 27th $120 + kit fee
ZIG ZAG BYZANTINE BRACELET

Explore the potential of simple hand-tools by assembling silver jump rings into a dynamic chain pattern to be embellished with gemstone beads. The first day will cover the basics of round metal wire, hand tools, and history of the fabled Byzantine chain. We will then be assembling pre-cut and tumbled sterling silver jump rings into the Byzantine chain, completed by adding sets of beads. This class will conclude with the demonstration on handcrafting a super-strong magnetic clasp to complete each bracelet. Instructor will provide printed handouts, ring-n-bead supply kits, and all hand tools needed. Students should bring their own individual light, small extension cord, and an optivisor.
Day Two - Sunday, September 28th $120BEADED TRIPOLI BRACELET 
The second cold-connection workhsop will explore a variety of innovative wire to plier bead setting techniques. Bypassing the need for a hot torch, students will utilize simple hand tools to set gemstone beads onto silver headpin wires. These beads will then be assembled into dynamic chain design composed of flush-cut and tumbled sterling silver jump rings. The class will conclude with a demonstration on forging a sterling S-clasp utilizing a hammer against anvil. Instructor will provide printed handouts, ring-n-bead supply kits, and all hand tools needed. Students should bring their own individual light, small extension cord, and an optivisor.
Some basic chain working knowledge is helpful, but no experience is required. Each day you will leave with a bracelet on your wrist and a healthy hobby under your hat. This is a good opportunity to do something fun together with a partner or a young teen!

Susan Dilger has been working with Metal Clay for over 4 years. She is a PMC Certified Artisan and her work has been shown in Los Angeles, Taos and Vail art galleries and fine women's stores as well as Bloomingdales in Los Angeles and San Diego. TOTALLY PLASTERED and PLASTER ARCHITECHTURE with Stephanie Lee

In this process workshop, students will learn the basics of working with plaster and plaster-like products for the purpose of creating deep texture in their 2-dimensional artwork. The focus will be in depth exploration of texturing techniques with trowels, sculpting and casting techniques, painting, tinting, sanding, carving, rolling, etching and writing into plaster. Students will also learn and experiment with various plaster recipes for use in different forms of artwork such as wood, canvas, altered books, jewelry and more.
