THE FINE ART OF STORYTELLING with  Marilyn Noble
August 29th to 31st
 
Whether you’re a published novelist, an aspiring essayist, or someone who writes for only for the pleasure of seeing your words on the page, you know good storytelling skills are essential to the craft of writing. In this intimate and interactive workshop, you’ll learn about the elements that make a compelling story, how to use your five senses to liven your prose, how to uncover your personal truth and incorporate it into your writing, and how to use punctuation and word choice to set the mood, emotion, and scene. We’ll also explore the concept of Felt Sense -- using the mind-body connection to access ideas and creativity and work through blocks. Writing experience is not necessary.

WEAVING WITH STICKS with Kimberly Hamill
September 6 - 8
Instructor Kimberly Hamill first learned to weave from Navajo weaver Pearl Sunrise. She then apprenticed for two years with Racehel Brown (founder of Weaving Southwest and author of The Weaving, Spinning and Dying Book.
Kim has been an active practitioner of visual arts her whole life, in weaving she has now found her true passion and talent. She is an avid explorer of different weaving techniques and especially inspired by indigenous waving traditions of the Americas.
 
Here is your chance to learn Andean style backstrap weaving with local Taos weaving instructor Kimberly Hamill. The simplest tools–straight sticks and string–are all you need to execute elegant tapestries.

METAL CLAY and MIXED MEDIA CLASS with Sherri Haab

Sherri Haab is a best selling craft author with over 20 published books to her credit, with several selling over a million copies each. Award winning titles such as: The Incredible Clay Book(Klutz), The Art of Metal Clay, Metal Clay and Mixed Media Jewelry, The Art of Resin Jewelry, Beaded Macramé Jewelry and Designer Style Jewelry(Watson Guptill). She has recently released a how-to DVD on Metal Clay with another DVD about Resin Jewelry to follow (CCP videos). Learn to make simple silver metal clay charms and bead forms. After the metal clay is fired and finished, students will go on to make beautiful mixed media jewelry pieces. Sherri will teach techniques using polymer clay, resin, glitter and small inclusions to add color and sparkle to your finished metal clay charms and beads. Finished pieces can then be used in a variety of ways. Make a “sampler bracelet” of mixed media charms or choose a favorite technique perfect for a pendant or pair of earrings.   This class will inspire you to look at simple craft materials in a whole new way when combined with precious silver to create designer style jewelry.

HANDCRAFTING CHAIN AND BEAD JEWELRY with Scott David
September 26 - 28
 
Scott David Plumlee has been inspiring a new generation of chain jewelers over the past decade, leading over 100 workshops nationwide. Scott recently published his first book, “Handcrafting Chain & Bead Jewelry,”and he is in the progress of making a five-book series. A world traveler and jack-of-all-trades, Scott has studied ancient cultures and their craft designs while traveling through 32 countries on four continents.
Scott David Plumlee, author and Jewelry teacher is offering an inspirational weekend on chain making. Join Scott on the Friday evening for an informal meet and greet where you can handcraft your own 'tornado-inspired' wire-wrapped earrings from his upcoming 2nd book.
 

Friday, September 26th 5-7pm $20

Scott will be demonstrating and having participants make a few pair of Tornado-wrapped Earrings; a simple wire-wrapping technique from his 2nd book. 

 

Day One – Saturday September 27th $120  + kit fee

ZIG ZAG BYZANTINE BRACELET

Explore the potential of simple hand-tools by assembling silver jump rings into a dynamic chain pattern to be embellished with gemstone beads. The first day will cover the basics of round metal wire, hand tools, and history of the fabled Byzantine chain. We will then be assembling pre-cut and tumbled sterling silver jump rings into the Byzantine chain, completed by adding sets of beads. This class will conclude with the demonstration on handcrafting a super-strong magnetic clasp to complete each bracelet. Instructor will provide printed handouts, ring-n-bead supply kits, and all hand tools needed. Students should bring their own individual light, small extension cord, and an optivisor.

Day Two - Sunday, September 28th  $120  
 

BEADED TRIPOLI BRACELET

The second cold-connection workhsop will explore a variety of innovative wire to plier bead setting techniques. Bypassing the need for a hot torch, students will utilize simple hand tools to set gemstone beads onto silver headpin wires. These beads will then be assembled into dynamic chain design composed of flush-cut and tumbled sterling silver jump rings. The class will conclude with a demonstration on forging a sterling S-clasp utilizing a hammer against anvil. Instructor will provide printed handouts, ring-n-bead supply kits, and all hand tools needed. Students should bring their own individual light, small extension cord, and an optivisor.

Some basic chain working knowledge is helpful, but no experience is required. Each day you will leave with a bracelet on your wrist and a healthy hobby under your hat. This is a good opportunity to do something fun together with a partner or a young teen!

FINE SILVER PENDANT AND EARRINGS with Susan Dilger

October 11 & 12 

Susan Dilger has been working with Metal Clay for over 4 years. She is a PMC Certified Artisan and her work has been shown in Los Angeles, Taos and Vail art galleries and fine women's stores as well as Bloomingdales in Los Angeles and San Diego.  
Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a revolutionary material comprised of fine silver (or gold) particles, an organic binder and water which is shaped and formed like traditional clay. Once the item is fired in a kiln, the binder is burned away and you are left with a treasure that is 99.9% fine silver! Here is your chance to explore this marvelous new material.

PMC Collage pendant / earrings
In this intensive workshop suitable for beginners, you will explore rolling, texturing, cutting and shaping the clay into coils and custom balls to make an original fold-over bale pendant and earrings. The class will cover various finishing methods including brushing, burnishing and patina. Includes use of all tools in class. A $30.00 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class. 
 
 
 
Day Two – Sunday October 12  $120
PMC Lentil Bead Pendant
For a truly “original” touch, we will start with carving your own stamp and then using it to texture a reversible lentil bead.   Learn how to shape a domed form, affix a back panel and finish with a sterling bale so that both sides of your creation will dazzle your friends!
A $30.00 material fee is payable to the instructor in class.

TOTALLY PLASTERED 
In this process workshop, students will learn the basics of working with plaster and plaster-like products for the purpose of creating deep texture in their 2-dimensional artwork. The focus will be in depth exploration of texturing techniques with trowels, sculpting and casting techniques, painting, tinting, sanding, carving, rolling, etching and writing into plaster. Students will also learn and experiment with various plaster recipes for use in different forms of artwork such as wood, canvas, altered books, jewelry and more. A take-home booklet of hints, tips and general information for working with plaster at home will help them in future working with plaster.
 
Day Two – Sunday October 19th $120 + kit fee
PLASTER ARCHITECHTURE 
In this fun exploration of translating plaster into three dimensional form students will learn plaster sculpture construction and armature as well as carving and shaping sculptural forms. Students will also learn to work with plaster and plaster-like products as well as recipes for creating textural effects and hardness in the plaster. 
Various finishing and textural effects using paint, carving, sanding, incorporating paper ephemera and found objects will be explored in depth. They can also expect to get a bit messy but will enjoy that they may be able to finish a sculpture in this one day class even with no prior sculpting experience. A take-home booklet of hints, tips and general information for working with plaster at home will help them in future working with plaster.
